The Trench Coat Never Goes Out of Style

A classic trench is the one coat that works every autumn, dressed up or down. Why it is worth owning and the easy ways to wear it.

Quick answers
Is a trench coat worth it?
Yes. A classic trench works every autumn and spring, dresses up or down and never dates, which makes it one of the most worn coats you can own.
What do you wear under a trench coat?
A roll neck and jeans for day, or a knit and a satin skirt for something smarter. Keep the layers neutral so the trench stays clean and classic.

Some pieces come and go, and some just quietly work forever. The trench coat is firmly in the second group. It has looked good for a hundred years and it will look good next autumn too, which makes it one of the smartest things you can own. The high street versions are lovely and cheap, so there is no reason to skip it.

Why the trench wins

A trench is light enough for those in between days when a wool coat is too much and a jacket is not enough. It goes with everything, it never looks dated, and it makes even scruffy jeans look considered. One good beige or cream trench covers most of autumn on its own.

Thrown over jeans and a knit

The easy everyday version. A trench left open over a cable knit and straight jeans is relaxed and put together at once. Add loafers or ankle boots and a bag and you have an outfit that took no thought at all but looks like it did.

A trench is the great leveller. It makes a cheap outfit look expensive and a smart outfit look easy. Very few pieces do both.

Belt it for a sharper shape

Wearing it open reads relaxed. Cinching the belt at the waist reads sharp and deliberate, and it gives you a lovely shape over anything, even a jumper. Same coat, two completely different moods, depending on how you tie it.

Keep the rest simple

The trench is the star, so let it be. Plain top, plain trousers or jeans, one good bag and simple gold jewellery. Add sunglasses and the whole thing looks quietly expensive. The magic of a trench is how little effort it asks for.

Buy one classic trench you love and it will still be working for you in ten years. That is about as good as clothes get.
